When someone asked me to explain the NRA’s vituperative web attack this morning on Obama’s children for having armed security, I had two answers. First, seething anger. Second: if you perceive someone blaming you for complicity in the massacre of children, it makes sense (in its own primitive kind of logic) to redirect that hostility toward the social guardianship of your antagonist and the children under his wing.
Of course, the unstated agreement to leave the President’s children out of politics aside,
hurling lunch buckets at Obama after Sandy Hook is completely bizarre. But that’s why they call it “blind” rage.
