Chatting the Pictures: In Campaign’s Closing Weeks, Trump’s Incoherence Takes Center Stage

Welcome to Chatting the Pictures. Every two weeks, we present a short, lively video discussion between Michael Shaw, publisher of Reading the Pictures, and writer, professor, and historian, Cara Finnegan, examining a significant picture in the news. Chatting the Pictures is produced by Liliana Michelena.

About the Video

This photo of presidential nominee Donald Trump, circulated by the Economic Club of New York, was taken during his speech to the organization in New York City on September 5, 2024. Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race in July led to a shift in the media landscape, which included greater focus and open discussion of Donald Trump’s cognitive health. Expectations for his debate with Kamala Harris intensified the focus primed by several public events, including his appearance at the Economic Club, where he gave an exceptionally incoherent response to a question about childcare affordability.

In the video, we highlight how often Trump elicits notably confused and skeptical physical responses and how easily these instances stand out when the press isn’t overlooking his bizarre claims and odd tangents. We look deeply at his visual engagement with the New York Economic Club members, especially his interaction with board member Reshma Saujani.
