Chatting The Pictures: The Rare Photo of Trump as Warped and Tortured as the Man Himself

Welcome to Chatting the Pictures. Every two weeks, we present a short, lively video discussion between Michael Shaw, publisher of Reading the Pictures, and writer, professor, and historian, Cara Finnegan, examining a significant picture in the news. Chatting the Pictures is produced by Liliana Michelena.

About the Video

This photo of Donald Trump was taken by Mark Peterson for The New York Times. It shows Trump addressing this year’s CPAC convention in Washington, D.C., on February 24, 2024.

Typically outward-focused and in-your-face, it is surprising to see a portrait of Trump on stage that is this tangled, tense, and concealed. In the video, we consider the photo’s political and psychological symbolism, we offer a cinematic parallel, and we discuss the challenge of distinguishing Trump from his act.
