Welcome to Chatting the Pictures. Every two weeks, we present a short, lively video discussion between Michael Shaw, publisher of Reading the Pictures, and writer, professor, and historian, Cara Finnegan, examining a significant picture in the news. Chatting the Pictures is produced by Liliana Michelena.
David Paul Morris took this photo for Bloomberg News. It shows the Twitter sign partially removed from the company’s headquarters in San Francisco on Wednesday, July 26, 2023. Elon Musk’s move to rebrand Twitter and replace its iconic bird logo with an X is just the latest step in his effort to make over the social media platform in his own image. In the ten months since Musk took over, he has damaged Twitter by firing top executives, doing mass layoffs, driving away advertisers and users, and unraveling content moderation, exposing the site to increased misinformation and hate speech.
In the video, we swoop into the symbolism of the dismembered logo, the visual dynamics of the replacement “X,” and the effect of the live bird and the “BlueSky.“
