Yes, they are trained actors fully aware they are on camera. Also, everyone attending this year’s Golden Globes was predisposed to fully engage with whatever Oprah had to say. In light of the sexual harassment and abuse awakening that has shaken up Hollywood and the country, however, this evening and this event had a special charge to it. With all the women attending wearing black and the evening dedicated to a special defense fund, Winfrey’s speech for winning the Cecil B. de Mille award (the first black woman to be so honored) turned out to be the emotional equivalent of a #MeToo or #TimesUp keynote and call-to-arms.
Watching the video of the speech, I was taken up with the audience cutaways. Yes, these are the some of the most glamorous, attractive and popular faces on the planet. The degree to which these actors were rapt and moved by the speech felt entirely genuine though. On top of that, what a respite from the typical routine, the perfunctory adoration, and the patriarchal business-as-usual.
