Got this message from Alan Chin about an hour ago:
just arrived NOLA after 22 hour drive from denver including an hour to buy supplies (gas cans, food, batteries, etc.) and the last three hours on back roads getting into town because all of the interstates were “contraflowed” to allow evacuating people to leave on all lanes.
one bar and restaurant open on bourbon street. had a bloody mary. staying at a friend’s house who has evacuated to jackson, mississippi. no tree over this house, so should be OK.
it is a ghost town. streets empty. national guard out in force. we await tomorrow.
This image, taken by Alan on September 5, 2005, shows people on a New Orleans highway overpass waiting to be evacuated. It reflects a concern we are all feeling right now.
