Of course, the big story of the 9/11 Commission final report is that there was never any link between al Qaeda and Iraq.
The story people are overlooking, however, is the diplomatic incompetence of Sudan. From 1991 to 1996, having provided refuge to al Qaeda, the Sudanese convinced bin Laden to give up supporting anti-Hussein forces and “arranged for contacts between Iraq and al Qaeda.” Despite the effort, however, the Commission reports that nothing ever came of it.
(By the way, the President and Vice-President spent a lot of time earlier this week rehashing every known al Qaeda-Iraq link rumor. If they had only waited a day or so, they could have saved themselves a lot of energy.)
